Tutorial: How to use dialog in games.

Hey guys! Its RobloxianFire2 coming at you with another tutorial. In this tutorial, I will be showing you how you can use dialog to make your games more interesting. Dialog can be used to make NPCs for RPG games where the players can chat to the NPCs to get quests to do. I'm only going to show you the basics of dialog, if you want to get more advanced into the dialogs, you might want to read up on the ROBLOX wiki about it: wiki.roblox.com/.
Lets get started!
We need something to put the dialog into. I'm just going to use a simple 3x3x3 plate like this:

Right, time to insert the dialog. Head up to Insert > Object then click on Dialog.
In the explorer, you should now see the part and beneath it "Dialog".
Now, I am going to show you a bit about the options in the dialog.

First, we have the "InitialPrompt" option. This is what the NPC/brick with the dialog inside it will say when a player clicks on the dialog. For the purpose of this tutorial, I am going to make it say "Hello. Is there anything I can help you with?". To do this, just click the box next to "InitialPrompt" in the dialog and type what you want it to say. So, when you click on the dialog, you should get something like this:

Okay, so we have our dialog. Time to add some choices. To do this, select the dialog in the explorer, head up to Insert > Object then select "DialogChoice".
Lets go over some of the options.

UserDialog is the choices the player gets to choose from once the dialog has finished. When the player clicks on a choice, the ResponseDialog is what the thing with the dialog will say. In my case, I've made the player say "Who are you"? Once the player has selected the option, the brick will say "I'm Mr.Brick. I am part of ROBLOX. I am here to give information to new players like you."

So, that is basically it. If there is anything I've forgot, please tell me in the comments. ;)

I hope you guys have enjoyed this particular tutorial, my name is RobloxianFire2 and I suppose I bid you all farewell!
Thank you so much for reading!

ROBLOX Reviews: ROBLOX Base Wars FPS vs Ro-Planes 2

Edition #13

Welcome to another edition of ROBLOX Reviews! I'm running out of things to say here so lets get straight onto the reviews!

Idea: 7/10
Its not that original, but this game made by Games (Owned by ROBLOX) puts a nice twist on classic CTFs on ROBLOX. First of all there are classes and they are really fun to play! The game doesn't lag at all thanks to it all being made out of terrain. Its very detailed and shows off what you can make with terrain.

Gameplay: 8/10
The map is fairly large and fun to explore and fight in. There are 5 different classes each with different weapons and stats. My favourite was the medic, who can heal people in a Team Fortress 2 style.

Scripting: 9/10
There is a fair amount of high quality scripting in this game. The guns are well scripted and so is the leaderboards, capture points and classes. It all works really well.

Environment: 9/10
Like I touched on earlier, this game is made entirely out of terrain. It certainly is very detailed however it could be more detailed using actual bricks, but this still is a great environment for a great game in general!

Enjoyment: 8/10
This game is very enjoyable and I think the great Environment, Scripting and general execution of the idea makes it that way.

Idea: 9/10
On face value this game seems to just be a flight simulator. But when you enter the game you realise it is much more. Essentially you load your plane with crates which you can then sell for money at islands. This money then enables you to fly bigger planes with bigger capacity (one assumes)

Gameplay: 7/10
The game falls down immediately with its game play. Its incredibly confusing to a newcomer. After a few minutes I found out what I had to do, by chance I found the crates. However, flying was a different matter. I never left the beginning island, it was too hard to fly. My controls failed

Scripting: 7/10
The scripting in the game is very good from picking up crates and taking them to your plane to the controls of the plane. However, some of the controls on the plane didn't do what they were supposed to. The A and D keys did not turn my plane so I ended up crashing into a building opposite the hangar and exploding.

Environment: 6/10
As I said, I haven't seen all the environments because it was so hard to fly! However, the first Island is fairly boring with just bricks to create mountains etc. It seems to be a very old way of building, with just bricks and no c-framing

Enjoyment: 6/10
This game could be very enjoyable at the start, where you are delivering cargo and making money. However, going back and forth would be fairly repetitive. However, making money means you can buy access to bigger planes and this advancement in the game might make you play for longer.

FINAL SCORES

Idea: 7/10 vs 9/10
Ro-Planes 2 wins!
Gameplay: 8/10 vs 7/10
ROBLOX Base Wars FPS wins!
Scripting: 9/10 vs 7/10
ROBLOX Base Wars FPS wins!
Environment: 9/10 vs 6/10
ROBLOX Base Wars FPS wins!
Enjoyment: 8/10 vs 6/10
ROBLOX Base Wars FPS wins!

So with a total of 4 wins out of 5, the overall winner is:

ROBLOX Base Wars FPS!

Tutorial: How to make a dancefloor.

Hello everyone and welcome to my 3rd tutorial. In this tutorial, I will be showing you how to make a dancefloor using some bricks and a simple script. Although it may sound hard, trust me, its not.

To start, we're going to need ROBLOX studio, like we did in my previous tutorial. I will not go over how to do it again because it would be a waste of time. To see how, check out my previous tutorial.
Once we're in ROBLOX Studio, we need to open a place. Go to your places and choose one to build the dancefloor in then click on "Edit".
Once we're in the place, we now need to get everything ready. For this tutorial, I will be using 17 5x5 bricks for the dancefloor. It doesn't matter about the color as they will be changing all the time with the script we will add later.
Right now, it should be like this:

Next, we need to add the script to make them flash. To do this, we will need to create a script in one of the bricks. Once we have got a script inside a brick, we need to copy this inside it:

while true do
script.Parent.BrickColor = BrickColor.random()

wait(1)
end

Once we have this script in one brick, we need to copy it into all the other bricks.
Just exit out of the script editor and select the script. Next, just press CTRL+C on your keyboard to copy it onto your clipboard.
Once we have the script copied, we need to paste it into the other bricks. Just right-click on each of the bricks individually and click the "Paste into" option to paste the script into the brick.

Once we have all the bricks with the script inside, we now need to test! If the script works, every brick should change a different color each second.
If the end result doesn't work like this, repeat all the steps again to see if that works.

I hope you guys have enjoyed this tutorial. Be sure to look out for more in the coming days! =)
Until next time, happy BLOXing!

Contest: Best Picture Taker.

Yes, its that time! Time for a contest. This contest will be focused around picture taking as, after all, I am a graphics designer.
What I need you to do is to find a good place on ROBLOX that you'll think could get you the prize for the best picture taker. There are some rules though.

Rules

1. No sharing pictures with others to get others to win. This means giving people your pictures that YOU took. This is classed as cheating and if found, you will be disqualified.

2. Make sure your in a relatively good place to take a picture in. A picture with tons of people in the shot will not give a clear understanding of what the place is about.

3. If you edit the picture, don't edit it so it looks better than it did by adding stuff such as more scenery. This is classed as cheating.

To enter this contest, all you have to do is take a picture which follows the rules above and then send it to me on twitter using the hashtag "robloxiatodaypicturecontest". For example, the tweet would look like this:

@rbx_rf2 [[IMAGE]] #robloxiatodaypicturecontest

I haven't decided on a prize yet but as the contest progresses, I'm sure I'll think of something. The contest ends in 3 weeks. (Wednesday 7th March).

Good luck!

Today's Tip: How to earn more money.

Hi! Here is something new for you today. Nearly every week, I will try to post at least one or two tips. This one is how to earn more money.
The easiest way to earn money is to create good places that are original and will make people want to play it. Here are a few tips to making a successful game:

  • Keep the brick count to at least under 2000.
  • Make it original.
  • Make the map size just right for the game.
  • Lock and anchor your terrain.
If you follow those tips, you'll be able to make an effective game. But, that is not all. For more tips on how to make a good game, click here.

The second way to earn money is to make and sell clothes. Many people such as VendettaTheGreat and Sheeppie make their money by selling clothes. But not any old clothes. They put time and effort into their clothes to make it stand out. Here is a few tips to making clothes stand out:
  • Use an original design.
  • Don't copy others.
If you follow those tips, you'll be making your clothes stand out from others meaning people would want to buy yours more.

I hope I helped you with these tips. If I did, feel free to tell me in the comments section or on ROBLOX. My name is RobloxianFire2.

See yah next time! :)

Site Upgrade - 14/02/2012.

Hi! Today, you may have noticed a change that has been happening over the last 10 minutes before this being posted. This is where I have been changing labels for posts. Now, in every post, a label will be added to correspond to what the post is about. For example, if I posted a hat review, the label would be "Hat Review". If I posted a tutorial, the label would be "Tutorial". If you have any questions about this upgrade, please feel free to post them in the comments below. ;)

Tutorial: How to install plugins.

Oh hello there! Welcome to my second tutorial. Before I start, I would like to say a very big sorry. The reason behind this is that I haven't been posting much as I wanted to. From now on, I PROMISE to try post at least once or twice a week. Now, on with the tutorial. In this tutorial, I will be showing you how to install plugins.
Plugins is a feature that ROBLOX implemented a little while ago, in around November time. What this allows you to do is to use scripting to do certain things which could take some time without a plugin. For example, CFraming in studio. This would take quite a while because before plugins came along, you had to use the command bar to cframe. Believe it or not, plugins are VERY easy to install. Just follow these steps and you'll be doing it in no time. ;)

Step 1
The first thing to do is to open up ROBLOX Studio. To do this, click on the start menu, head to all programs, find ROBLOX and click on ROBLOX Studio. Another way to do this is to open the start menu and type in the search bar "ROBLOX Studio".
Searching For ROBLOX Studio.

Step 2
The second thing to do is, once you have ROBLOX Studio open, go to Tools > Open Plugins Folder
This will open your plugins folder. Another way to open the plugins folder is to, on a windows 7 computer, search for C:\Users\YOUR_COMPUTER_USERNAME\AppData\Local\Roblox\plugins. Obviously, replace YOUR_COMPUTER_USERNAME with the actual username your logged into the computer with. I'm logged in as "Liam" so I'd do C:\Users\Liam\AppData\Local\Roblox\plugins.
Inside the plugins folder.

Step 3
Once you are inside your plugins folder, you are now ready to actually install plugins. To do this, you must have some plugins to install. I suggest going to either ironnoob.com and finding the roblox section of the forums or searching the internet for some. But, whilst searching for plugins through google or anything, be aware that not all plugins are legit. Some people get them and then put viruses in them. If you do download a plugin that you do not think is legit, scan the files with an anti-virus. Once you have downloaded a plugin, if it came in a .zip format, unzip it. A great place to find good plugins could be from Crazyman32's website: http://crazyman32.weebly.com/plugins.html
Step 4
Once you have unzipped it, open the folder that is created from the zip being extracted. If there is another folder inside that folder, check if there is anything inside. If there is files inside such as an icon and a .lua file, go back to that folder by clicking the back button and then drag it into the plugins folder.
Step 5
To test if you have installed the plugin correctly, close and reopen ROBLOX studio and then open a blank place. If you have installed the plugin correctly, you should see the icon that was in the folder along with the .lua file. If not, follow these steps again and see if that works.

I hope I helped you with this tutorial! If you have any problems, post them in the comments below or message me on ROBLOX, my username is RobloxianFire2.
Remember, I will be posting tutorials like this around every week so keep checking back. ;)
Thanks for reading!!!

ROBLOX Reviews: Nacht Der Untoten vs COR5- Roblox At War: The Zombies!

Edition #12
Hello and welcome to ROBLOX Reviews! Today is another special edition, and we will be reviewing two versions of Zombies, from Call of Duty. Lets crack on!

Idea: 7/10
The idea isn't strictly original, its based on Call of Duty yet it plays well on ROBLOX and feels original.

Gameplay: 8/10
The gameplay is very good, you shoot the zombies with guns. The first few guns feel fairly unresponsive but I think they would require some upgrading to become powerful. There are many upgrades and the game goes in rounds, with each becoming harder until a team loses.

Scripting: 8/10
The scripting in this game is very good also. There are some nice GUIs and the zombies have some very well scripted AIs. The core game is also scripted well too with rounds that get harder and it appears that there are some random events where you can get powerups. One of these happened while I was playing called "insta-kill". One can only imagine it made zombies die with one hit.

Environment: 7/10
The environment seems a bit lack-luster in the game. Everything is very white even though its night outside! It seems to be a big environment but it hasn't got alot of good detail.

Enjoyment: 6/10
This game for me, got boring after a few minutes because it does not seem very responsive in terms of guns. The early guns are very bad. Also, when I was trying to revive someone, the instructions that I got did not work. However, this game would be very fun if you were playing with friends because you would have to stick together to give each other support and stop them from dying!

Idea: 7/10
I don't really think I can give this game any more or less than I gave the other, it is a clone of COD's Zombies but is also executed nicely with some originality in there.

Gameplay: 10/10
The gameplay in this game is very well done, everything works well, looks nice and even the early weapons are good. Its upgrades are cool too! Fog really gives it an atmosphere! It re-creates the COD Zombies feel really well.

Scripting: 9/10
There is alot of scripting in this place. But that isn't the point of this marking point. Its whether or not the quality is good. Here it is. It works amazingly and makes the game what it is, from leaderboards to repairing windows.

Environment: 9/10
The environment here is very good and feels like the COD map. It also looks a bit more intresting than the place I reviewed first

Enjoyment: 8/10
This game is alot more responsive but alot harder, even at round 3! However, it still is really fun to play and might make you stay a bit longer than the first place and if you play with friends you could play for ages!

Final Scores
Idea: 7/10 vs 7/10
Tie!
Gameplay: 8/10 vs 10/10
COR5- Roblox At War: The Zombies! wins!
Scripting: 8/10 vs 9/10
COR5- Roblox At War: The Zombies! wins!
Environment: 7/10 vs 9/10
COR5- Roblox At War: The Zombies! wins!
Enjoyment: 6/10 vs 8/10
COR5- Roblox At War: The Zombies! wins!

So with 4 wins out of 5, the winner is

New Feature Preview: Trading System

A quick announcement, theres a new concept picture of the trading system

Certainly very intresting!

Ambassador Links: Gone

Yesterday, Telamon tweeted a few things about the Ambassador feature.
Before we go into what he said, we'll discuss what the Ambassador feature actually was.

It was a feature that let you embed links to roblox on other sites and would, if approved, earn you 2 tickets per link. Established in 2009, the ambassador program has had reasonable success but now it seems to be finished.

"Digging up stats on the Ambassador program to determine if it deserves to live #roblox"

This tweet was sent by Telamon yesterday from the account @shedletsky. Shortly after that was sent, this tweet arrived

"#ROBLOX Ambassador Program verdict: bit.ly/A0qssW (via @gkku)"

If you've clicked on the link it is pretty obvious it is going to be removed shortly.

Roblox Reviews: Robloxias Best Prison vs DML - Prison Roleplay

Edition #11

Welcome to a special edition of Roblox Reviews. This week, I'll be reviewing two places with the theme of prison!

The first place claims to be the winner already. But will it be? Lets commence the reviews!

Idea: 8/10
The idea for this place is quite original. Your either a police officer or a prisoner and you have to escape, but the police must try and stop you.

Gameplay: 5/10
The gameplay of this game is great. It is very confusing to know where to go and the map seems quite large; your in a police station that is very complex.

Scripting: 4/10
There is not alot of high-quality scripting in this game. It is alot of what seems to be free models and some GUI that aren't great.

Environment: 3/10
The environment in the game is poor. Its very confusing and being a police officer, it is hard to know what to do and where to go.

Enjoyment: 2/10
Its very hard to enjoy this game when you can't find your way around. The prisoners, to my knowledge, don't have anything to fight with whereas the police do, so you are instantly killed if you leave. Also, because the police have full control over everything, you are rarely allowed to leave.

DML - Prison Roleplay by MasterofDeathOnes

Idea: 8/10
The idea is original, as far as I can tell. You roleplay in a Prison. Even if its not original, its still the most popular on ROBLOX.

Gameplay: 8/10
The gameplay is going to be really good if you like Roleplay. Like I said the last time I reviewed a roleplay place; its up to you to decide whether its fun or not because its whether or not you like roleplaying. However, I enjoyed exploring this place without roleplaying!

Scripting: 7/10
There is some nice scripting in this game. The GUI's are nice and theres nice scripting, like telling Prisoners they can go and have dinner. Its very nice.

Environment: 7/10
The environment is very well detailed and perfect to roleplay in. However, it doesn't feel like a prison as such. Maybe I was just looking in the wrong areas...

Enjoyment: 8/10
If you like Roleplay, I think you will like this. I don't particularily like roleplay but I still found this game nice to look around. It's worth a look!

Final Scores
Idea: 8/10 vs 8/10

TIE
Gameplay: 5/10 vs 8/10
DML - Prison Roleplay wins!
Scripting: 4/10 vs 7/10

DML - Prison Roleplay wins!
Environment: 3/10 vs 7/10
DML - Prison Roleplay wins!
Enjoyment: 2/10 vs 8/10
DML - Prison Roleplay wins!

So with 4 wins out of 5, the winner is:

Hat Review: Adventurer's Cap

Adventurer's Cap

Price: Tx 500

Price: 8/10

The price is very good and affordable for NBC members of ROBLOX. It has a nice texture too, so I think it is worth it.

Colours: 7/10

The colours add alot of detail to this. The feather is nicely coloured and so is the blue on the hat. Its different shades add alot of detail.

Mesh: 7/10

The mesh, while not being used before (I don't think I've seen it before), doesn't seem very original, but is still a great mesh. It has alot of nice detail and looks realistic.

Overall: 8/10

This item is  good, it has a nice, realistic texture and has some nice colours which add to its realism. The mesh helps too. Its fairly cheap price makes this a must-have for an NBC that can afford. (And its not that much)
(Robloxia Today is Hiring a Hat Reviewer who would release daily articles much like these. To be one, tweet me @MasterD_RBLX or send me a PM on Roblox - MasterDaniel)
